Ava DuVernay is the star of Essence’s March Cover. It’s a good choice. March is Women’s History month and Ava is certainly making it. In directing the upcoming A Wrinkle in Time, Ava becomes the first woman of color to direct a live-action movie with a budget of more than $100 million. Major.
In the midst of all of this work, DuVernay carved out some time in her schedule to strike a pose for the cover of Essence, days before Christmas.

In the upcoming cover story, DuVernay talked about her Oscar-nominated documentary 13th, her independent distribution company Array, diversity in the entertainment industry and what she brings to the table as a woman.
“I don’t have to approach film like a man would, or like anybody else I read about, because it’s personal. So there’s no right way or wrong way. Directors talk about their process but that doesn’t have to be my process.”
